Behind the Curtin landscape

Grass Trees at Curtin University "What really makes Curtin's gardens stand out is the detail that goes into the planting," Matthew Lunn, Curator, Curtin Parks & Gardens.

Matthew Lunn, Curtin's Curator of Parks and Gardens (P&G), came to the Bentley Campus ten years ago from one of England's well-known gardens, the Royal Horticultural Societies garden in Wisley.

Surprisingly, whilst the Wisley gardens and the Bentley Campus are almost comparable in size, the climate is radically different.

Realising that a team effort was needed to provide a physical environment conducive to teaching, learning and research, Lunn and the grounds staff of 23, set about reforming Bentley's 116 hectares.

"Many of the P&G staff are qualified and experienced horticulturists. This has been a key element in changing the landscape to an oasis of botanical significance; it could not have been possible without their enthusiasm," said Lunn.

By 2000 the hard work was reaping rewards and the grounds were opened as part of the National Open Garden scheme. Twenty five new gardens had been created with an extensive floral range, and 50 hectares of grass were either renovated or replaced with an improved species of grass.

Today, five years later, the campus is a showcase with beds of native species and offers many a quiet retreat for staff, students and visitors.
