Curtin strengthens links with West Sumatra

Curtin's School of Education hosted a visit of officials from West Sumatra recently to discuss the development of an integrated English language and Mathematics and Science pedagogy program for teachers from that Indonesian province.

(L-R) Third Row: Robin Groves (Coordinator Bachelor of Education Secondary Program, Curtin) and Roy Reynolds

Professor Jennifer Nicol, Head of Education, said although the discussions were at an early stage, the basis for a solid relationship had already been underway for some time with West Sumatra due to Education lecturer Roy Reynolds running workshops there for many years.

"Indonesia has declared a 'National Intention' to have science and maths taught in English at one secondary school in each district in order to reach international standards," Dean Nicol says.

"This means teachers will need to bring their English to a sufficiently high standard to be able to sustain interaction at the classroom level."
